In just 3 days the pile has heated up to 110 degrees...
...even though the ambient air temp (7:41 PM PST) is 58 degrees F.
110 degrees on Day 3 is a good sign. My pile has reached the Active Zone, (100-130* F) where nearly all composting occurs at the microorganism level. Most insects and worms cannot withstand the heat of the pile.
I'm not going to add any worms to my pile, I learned that they don't like it warmer than about 75 F. I like the little vermis and don't want them to fry.
So it is up to the mico organisims, water and air.
Mother Nature: Bless this mess!
On to day 4 |
How hot is my pile?
My compost thermometer arrived today. Let's find out.
From what I've been reading, temperature is key in building and maintaining a successful compost pile.
You'll need to know
-when to turn your pile
-when to add more material
-when to water it
-when your compost is done
